Where the words come from
ENABLE2K has thousands of rare 6-letter words, so this list keeps only words that also appear in SCOWL, an open word list sorted by how familiar words are. The most common of those are marked as likely answers. It is built from open dictionaries and may differ slightly from any official game list. The full method is on the About page.

Open with RABIES or SALTER
These score highest on our 6-letter list because they place frequent letters in their most common positions. If you prefer to pick your own opener, choose one with as few repeated letters as you can.

Expect S at the start and E at the end
12% of likely 6-letter answers start with S, and 18% end with E. When the edges are still open, test those letters there first.

Watch for the ending -ER
-ER is the most common two-letter ending in our likely 6-letter answers (14% of them), followed by -NG. Once you see letters gathering at the end of the word, check these endings before trying rarer ones.

Expect repeated letters
52% of likely 6-letter answers contain at least one repeated letter. When the list runs dry, try a guess that doubles a letter you have already found.

The 6-letter list has 7,057 words, and 3,135 of them are marked as likely answers because they are common everyday words. It keeps only words that appear in both ENABLE2K and SCOWL, so rare dictionary words are left out.
What is a good first guess for a 6-letter Wordle?
Based on how often letters appear in each position across our 6-letter list, the strongest openers are RABIES, SALTER, SACRED and CASTER. They test common letters in the spots where those letters usually appear.
